Gathering thoughts…
A world of little thoughts.
It's the Friday afternoon, the feeling of welcoming the weekend starts setting in, a few have made plans for Friday night, while a few are making plans for a mini vacation, a few are just thinking to just sleep and forget away the week that has gone by... U start to hear the excitement around the floor and the noise…
What are you doing with your time, that makes you feel like it's not being wasted?
My friend Rahul and I recently exchanged messages praising the 1977 Fleetwood Mac album Rumours, particularly Lindsey Buckingham's gorgeous guitar in Never Going Back Again. Which reminded me of how I started building my CD collection. It was 1989 and I'd just arrived in New York as a student with no cash to spare. I…
I have always regarded opportunities as rare. Having that mentality does not help in university and, honestly, even in life. I was good at what I did. I am an excellent developer (I study Computer Science). Once people started noticing the quality of my work and the value I charged, the demand for my work increased.…
We reset ourselves by feeling like we've reclaimed control of our environment. Most of us have learned repeatable behaviours that help us feel normal. I wrote about how a bath resets me in a piece earlier. For some, it could be cleaning or cooking for another person. Some people maintain to-do lists. I've also heard…
When we feel displeased with someone, we make every effort to stop any interaction with them. It is liberating to see the difference it makes. In fact, once we have managed to master this detachment, we tend to feel bouts of motivation. The real tragedy is when something that causes us great pain is nothing alien but…
15 months ago I left my home and moved to NYC, marking my entry into the most socially disconnected phase of my life. Faced with the formidable foe of newfound isolation, I wanted to hold on to those in Seattle who made me feel like a loved member of humanity. I felt optimistic that maintaining contact over the phone…
Ever heard that saying? Course you have. Ever seen something genuinely new despite spending every day of your life on the internet seeing things that are little reworkings of things that have been done before? Sometimes yeah. This car thing is new to me. Look at it go!…
Today, I pitched during pitch night by build I felt good, I think I did a good job. I also feel like I was able to contribute very quickly to getting the presentation done, moving and increasing the quality/ funniness of it. Here is how I am trying to make the most out of the build cohort: 1. Meet interesting people,…
The second post on this journal should have come sooner. When I started, I had envisioned myself writing weekly, if not daily. I had grossly underestimated the toll that a change of surroundings can take on a person. When I was back in India, I would get enamoured by how eminent writers like Hemingway used to spend…
The golden sun dissolves into the forest which now looks like a painting. Warm wind kisses the cheek and tingles with her open hair. I lie down on the soft green grass with my friends. we listen to machine-made music from Britain. The air is crowded from the smoke of Davidoff. The mountains somehow resemble the folds…
Had such an amazing and cathartic session with Omar. 1. We looked back at and appreciated the journey I've been on this year. 2. He gave me the external validation I needed - what I felt was real. My pain was real. What I went through was indeed emotional abuse. Omar said that abusive people need to do a lot of work…
First post. Of many I hope. I'm here to support Louis. Because he came up with a great idea. Built it. Marketed it. See a problem, solve a problem. That is how mankind makes progress.
Routines are bossy. They are a fixed sequence of actions that must be followed to work their magic. You must follow your routine to make the magic happen. Don’t get me wrong. I love routines. The structure of routines helps you build good habits for your health, productivity, and more. They help me get through my day.…
She was a poem, I wrote in the sand, and I watched, As the waves of time, faded her memory. Time draws its own lines, carrying away each moment, each word. I was a fool to think, the shore, could hold her forever. Like the beautiful sunset, at dusk, watch it with awe, take it all in, because the sky will darken. Now,…
‘Indian Matchmaking’ and ‘A Suitable Girl’ have much in common: producer Smriti Mundhra, match-maker Sima Taparia, and an overwhelming display of complex but problematic routines and notions around arranged marriage. Yet, one is cringe (but binge-worthy), while the other is deeply unsettling. The difference in…
...a place where you get to write just 300 words. Nice. Just capture what's on the mind. A snapshot. First impression: Nice, neat, uncluttered. Reminds me of blank paper on typewriter, minus any other prompts. No random feeds and hashtags, pulls or pressures. What way will this go?
One of the best parts about my time in university was the people I met. Even though we were all very different people and quite literally, came from different places, I feel we were on a similar wavelength. We cared about similar things and as we discussed our varying points of view, we moved forward and deeper…
i used to feel like i have to figure out who i am first and THEN get a persona and THEN write but i've got it all backwards i'm supposed to just write and filter out the persona through the writing like a piece of artwork and it is not exactly myself but an art project just catch the thing and THEN shape it. and not…
My first book read by an Indian author, was, The Book Of Short Stories, By Rabindranath Tagore. It was in my school library at the age of 13, when I discovered this masterpiece. I was enthralled by the collection of stories in it that gave a brief understanding of the prevalent complex caste system, society and…
First draft: 4m50s; final draft: 16m50s Well, first let me say that I have been remote working for about 15 years off and on. Before it was cool and well before folks had the opportunity to do it for their full time job, I had the luxury of working remote from Hawaii, Los Angeles, etc. When I decided to get a full…
ahhh do we experience one emotion at a time? can you remember a singular moment of one emotion? i have bee trying to dig deep in my memories for a singular moment, so far no moment presents itself. in contradiction; the emotions we experience may all be defined as a excitement...
7: Wake up, Shower etc. 8: Meditate, Journal 9: Read 10: Write 11: Exercise 12: Work 4: Meet a friend 6: Dinner 7: Hobby 9: Go for a Walk, Call a friend/family 10: Clean House, Shower, Plan the next day 11: Bed Most of my days don't look like this. But this is what an ideal would look like for me. For work, I'm still…
Liberals defend the value of freedom of speech, but they are silent when asked what that speech ought to contain. Liberals fight in favor of the rule of law and due process, but when asked what the law ought to be, they have no preference. Liberals believe in free markets and private enterprise, but when asked for…
I don't really have much to write for today, so let me see: 1. Mehul's birthday party: I spent 15 minutes trying to get a unruly bunch of teenagers to play darts. It wasn't as annoying as i thought it would be, though. I pretty much jumped into auto-pilot mood of needing to take-charge 2. Pitch night by Build: I…
We are having an argument. On social media. Well, you know, not exactly an argument. That's what everyone always calls it. Maybe it's a conversation, a dialogue? It's hard to tell. Sometimes it feels tense, but I can't really know can I? Is there a goal in mind or are we just passing time. What is the endgame, I being…
Last week, I embarked on my first unplanned trip in over 8 years. I hopped on a bus, packed lightly and arrived in Kamlapur at 5 AM without a room booked. So I walked away in the opposite direction of the request bombs being dropped on me by persistent auto-drivers. I wanted to search a cheap homestay but fear of few…
Just saw though - from a dying 23 yo patient His last ideal was to bring his kindness and love to everyone around him And he hoped to be remembered from that Because when I was poor I was not in the right state of mind My mind was abit evil and selfish I didn’t want to spend time with my ex because I wanted to focus…
Today has been one of the most exhausting days i have had in a while. If i take a look at what i did today in terms of work: 1. Call with Harsh: 30 mins 2. Call with Shriya: 15 mins 3. Bliss club Interview: 1 hour 4. Call with NGO: 30 mins 5. Sleep: 2 hours 6. Freak out about salary: 40 mins 7. Warehousing call: 30…
Sometimes it doesn’t matter about the delivery (at first). Of course it matters but - what you started or initiated is much more interesting and useful/you’re supposed to live it that way. Imagine the scenario which you had in your head for quite a few times: You rather not do something because you’re afraid of making…
While getting reunited with an old friend from school, we started to rewind on the people in school if we still stayed in contact with them or any news about them, and I realized once again why I wanted to run away from that place and cut ties with the majority of my classmates from fake smiles to manipulation,…
More than half a decade ! I will be done with my current job soon, after having spent more than 6.5 years here. It feels strange , disconcerting , sad , exciting and a strange sense of relief as well. I don’t know what to feel or think anymore and hence am letting all sorts of emotions and feelings wash over me. This…
I was wondering about how long it takes to get the results of a blood culture and the fact that they don’t yield great results in most cases, which led me to think about flow cytometry and how it might be able to detect bacteria faster than waiting for bacteria to grow in a blood culture. Turns out other people have…
Many eloquent words will have been spoken and written around the world today about this tragic day in Liverpool FC's history. Best just to use those of Rodgers and Hammerstein here. When you walk through a storm Hold your head up high And don't be afraid of the dark At the end of a storm There's a golden sky And the…
The world is changing too fast. I'm not sure what the turning point was, but I went from thinking of people as old school, to realising that I'm finding it hard to keep up with the times. Social media is a constant reminder of this. A few years ago, I consoled myself that it was ok to stay off the gram as the negative…
it's haunting the extent to which i have gone quiet. last night i opened my instagram after a long time. it's purely an exhibitionist platform, but that aside i've some threads in there. most of them begin to grow quiet around 2018, gradually deafening in 2019 and coming to complete silence in 2020 - when i quit. i've…
Today was a day when i was having starting trouble The only thing that really got me kicked up and ready to go was when i got a call from an external entity. What do i learn from this? 1. I do not like moving when I do not know have any plan in place about how to achieve what I want to achieve 2. I am almost always…
"For my theme song, my leather black jeans on" are the two first bars on Kanye's song "Black Skin Head" from his album "Yeezus". If you don't know the background of the album, Yeezus, it's basically a huge "fuck you" to the entire hip-hop industry and it's Kanye truly accepting who he is as a person and doing whatever…
I've spent so much time in one mode of living (ie the aspirant mode) that something else feels foreign and alien, something abnormal and even wrong. I crave the familiarity, the structure, the discipline of the routine. I crave the sense of purpose it provides. Yet I must also begin to understand that living in just…
After an intense day, I just sat down to write today's post on Nicheless. While reflecting on my day, I have noticed, that all I did today was rushing from one task to the other - getting a lot of stuff done but never standing still, breathing in the moment. So instead of taking the time and coming up with something…
Rambling is what I do more than talking only to realise that talking is no more than censoring your rambling and picking out the best variation of a collection of words. The more you talk the better you get at picking out the best words and that is considered normal. The art of filtering your ramble is talking. All of…
When I got my first job, I was happy - not on top of the world - but definitely happy. In my final year, after frantically trying to secure internships, just so I could convert them into a job offer or sitting for every job interview just so that I could get a job, I had finally secured an offer. All those days -…
