On Rabindranath Tagore
My first book read by an Indian author, was, The Book Of Short Stories, By Rabindranath Tagore. It was in my school library at the age of 13, when I discovered this masterpiece. I was enthralled by the collection of stories in it that gave a brief understanding of the prevalent complex caste system, society and households pre-independence. It gave me a window into what adults called - life; on the betrayal of time, outgrowing the circumstances, influence of money, waxing and waning attractions, societal hierarchies and inequalities.
The way these stories are spun with the seemingly ordinary characters is an art in itself. A few of his stories also have a tinge of magical realism which sent chills down my spine!
I still occasionally go back to these stories for the nostalgia and tear up with excitement. Some times, the best times in your life are the ones where you have read wonderful literature.
A few months later, read the Chokher Bali, which is also made into a very well known movie (2003, Aishwarya Rai) and an episode in a series (Netflix, Radhika Apte). As a new teen, the book shook me. Also, the first time I read soemthing on envy, jealousy, love and betrayal and the psycological interplay of it. The protagonist was a fallible, strong woman turned the way she is as a byproduct of her society. In every story, in every book, I was awed by the message he sheds through his books for women to make something of themselves.
I want to read more and maybe continue with - Stray Birds.
Cant wait to read a bit of daily and share the wonderful prose out here!
