Predictions of 20 year olds
The world is changing too fast. I'm not sure what the turning point was, but I went from thinking of people as old school, to realising that I'm finding it hard to keep up with the times. Social media is a constant reminder of this.
A few years ago, I consoled myself that it was ok to stay off the gram as the negative outweighed the positives. But the world today requires you to have an online identity and reputation. There are many ways to build it, but just the thought of me doing dance videos on Tik Tok makes me shudder. "There's no way I'll ever need to do that" - well, I'm sure many people thought the same when asked to like a selfie for Instagram.
Even the kinds of jobs people are doing now - I get it and I see the value of it, but if I had to do the same, I wouldn't know where to start. Making memes is a great example. If you're good at making memes, you can get a legit job. In fact if you're good at it, you'll be as sought after as a developer.
So as I think about where the world is heading and try my best to plan for it, I realised that I've crossed over the line where now I am the "old school person".
10 years ago, among many things, I believed that working at startups was cool and buying a house or car wasn't necessary. That belief is quite common today. I wonder what beliefs would be common a decade from now.
So, I've been thinking of starting a podcast on this theme, where I would chat with 20 year olds about what they think the future looks like and why.
