Gathering thoughts…
A world of little thoughts.
i've apparently made it a quasi-tradition to start editing a new site or writing a new blog post (or if i'm feeling super ambitious, both!) right on the new year. two years ago it was substack, last year it was buttondown, and now it's omg.lol (and here too, i suppose). last night i entered the new year alone (with my…
What if we didn’t need to sleep, and this was all just mass hysteria?
As human organizations grow in size and complexity, they tend toward selecting for conformity over competence. If unchecked, this tendency can lead to ruin. Why does this happen? In order for the organization to be effective in pursuing its goals, the proportion of individuals tasked with making strategic decisions…
Now, I'll admit. When I started the idea for this post, it was to declare, "We've entered the 2nd Industrial Revolution!" Good thing I checked. It's easy for me to get consumed in my own hubris of knowledge, but even easier for me to say, "whoops, let's rethink this." Reading and learning more about the concept of an…
26 May 2022 0342 I'm on a date with a woman I don't know IRL. We're walking around in the south side of my home town and go into an old bank building I used to frequent. It's a combination library, pool hall & convenience store. There's a yellow & black strip down the middle of the floor dividing the room in half -…
While still in the early pages of reading the book- Four Thousand Weeks by Oliver Burkeman, something deeply poignant came through. Time as a unit of measure, is a relatively new phenomena. Watches and clocks arrived to help us become more productive and achieve more in a 24 hour time frame. Several authors have…
Friendly reminder to save your amazing ideas before they disappear into the void. Find a note app you love, or go old school with a note pad. Simple pen and paper. Write your ideas down right when you think of them. Review them daily. Don't forget to take action. Let your ideas live. Don't let them die on the page.…
today my thoughts about the future of digital worlds was more of how to make them 'abstract'. my reason is because good design that aims for longevity is not one that stands out, it generally embeds itself into a way of life, a culture. as i continue to develop ideas and critique digital worlds, having a design that…
The Hidden Costs of Too Many Choices An abundance of choice can seem like a luxury, but it often undermines our happiness. It might sound counterintuitive, but having too many options can be paralyzing and even make us miserable. Think about it: life was simpler for our great grandparents, who lived in close-knit…
I've been quick to dismiss most books as too long. Here's my logic: Books need to be thick enough for customers to feel like they're getting their money's worth at a bookstore. Hence, publishers create incentives that result in books being 10X longer than they should be. However, I recently discovered an added benefit…
For a long time now, I was eager to write content on a niche topic but was not able to do it due to lack of ideas. Now I have one idea on which I'm focused on, creating guides and publish them for public. The choices that I have to publish these guides on are: LinkedIn, Medium, Substack, Landing pages and website. I…
On a walking tour in Oaxaca, Mexico last year, my local guide said something that struck close to home – “Most homes and businesses in the city aren’t owned by Oaxacans. They’re owned by Americans.” Because of American demand, Oaxacans couldn’t afford to live in the best parts of their own city and were forced to live…
i have heard a lot of conversations attempt to define an NFT era in art as it occurs. the thing is, art eras are rarely defined at their current time. but for the sake of conversation an NFT could be seen as post-post-modern art where a standard is starting to emerge in the format is it created and the exploration of…
Below are some of the easiest ways to alleviate the moments where you feel doubtful or desperate. - Write exactly what you feel on a piece of paper. Trash it - Clean your cupboard. Iron your clothes while listening to music. - Call up a friend you haven't spoken to in a while - Take a piece of paper, and just…
I recently read an article by the creator of Gumroad, Sahil Lavingia, discussing their work values and how this has influenced Gumroad’s journey (no pun intended). It made me think about what I want for my business as it grows, and what my own values and expectations are. Like Lavingia, I believe in embracing the…
(The following is a RP entry from the perspective of my Project Zomboid character, again) I'm a bit scared right now to be honest. Today I was doing the usual looting and found a police station; Jackpot! I thought... and indeed I won the lottery of guns, after clearing 2 floors of zombies I got to the lockers and…
Have you had a distant relative of yours who came to you and asked, 'Oh, you have changed so much,' only to realize later that you are not the person they thought you were? Apart from the personality changes we experience in our lives, which we often refer to as phases resulting from significant life events, the truth…
“That which we call a rose by any other name would smell as sweet.” The Bard had wisdom it’s clear. Were a “rose” called a “plinth”, it would be just as pretty. Perhaps we’d have babies called Billy-Plinth? Is it true therefore that it doesn’t matter what you call your brand? If the product, service or values and…
When we prepared for our move from plush to mush, we planned to live mostly without electricity. Solar power was - and still is - part of our plan. Since that part requires more funds than currently in our tiny bank account, we rely on whatever electricity is available. I have mixed feelings about just how easy it has…
My parents and I went to England in the summer of 1972, by which time my Dad had ensured that I was already cricket mad, like any good Indian boy should be. India had just won Test series in both the West Indies and in England for the first time and Sunil Gavaskar had entered my personal pantheon of Hindu gods. Dad…
My girlfriends laughed when they wondered out loud if I wrote about them in my journal. Journals conjure up images of teenage girls' diaries under lock and key. Of course, they were curious. They saw me writing each morning of our getaway trip. What juicy details were included in my daily writings? Until then, I…
From a spiritual advisor: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=92i5m3tV5XY For the past ten years or so, every morning, the routine is to make my bed, read some spiritual literature, meditate, and pray. Lately, I have gone back to the ole Headspace well for meditation. But sometimes, like today, I sit still for a few…
I haven't published a writing in some time even though I started a blog post about the struggles with my wife. I have been distracting myself with my hobbies and social events and she needs me at home, or rather, present, since I am always at home. I have taken a break from learning the piano, in practice. I was…
I don't even know Why am I here HE didn't tell me Just left me in fear To figure it out For myself Without making sure That it is all clear This is not fair In any which way What else is to be done Someone who knows Please come And quickly tell me The direction to be taken Whether to go This way or that one This is…
Week two of the new routine and its going pretty well, but there are a number of hangups that I am having trouble with. The first thing is that I had a cigar last night and ended up staying up until 1AM which pushed my wake up to 8:30AM, which in turn, pushed everything else out. I have yet to do my piano and Spanish…
Rarely as bad as one might think. Odd dream overnight: only frag I remember is opening up a box, and seeing 2 x insulated car coffee mugs, upside down & protected by styrofoam dividers. Big work project begun. Leery @ first, but once I started, stuff started coming together. Fair bit of work left to do, but initial…
i watched "pom poko" and it was the most depressing thing i've ever seen! it took many of the themes that have been cycloning in my mind and made a shit sandwich of hopelessness. it sucked me in and strapped me in a Morale Free Fall it hypnotized me with its magical realism and silliness, and, once it got me in a…
"The Earth’s population at the time of the Rio summit?” 5.5 billion. And now? 8+ billion. - Its 30 years since the first Earth Summit in Rio - “The best time to plant that tree was 30 years ago” - “The next best time is today” looks at the gain vs the gap. Are we further ahead than we might have been? - Can fashion…
What is a model for radical honesty, and how can we communicate it in a way that others understand both our actions and their role in them? Consider a quadrant with "benefit to self" and "benefit to others" as its cornerstones. The opposite side consists of losses to oneself and others. Examining this model, what…
You want it - you need to get it. Speaking like yourself And having that “qualifications” and deep thought process Having a mind is one thing But speaking eloquently and able to convey your messages to the world is one too You think of mum - speaks and shouts loud but no content - people look at her for fun Think of…
I prefer packing last minute. It has helped me pack better and not forget the essential items. But this preference is in stark contrast with that of my parents. My mum packs about 2-3 days in advance, and my dad at least the day prior. My preference started changing when I began traveling without my parents. At first,…
Oh to stand in the rain without a care in the world. To lie on a warm boulder after a cold swim in the river. To take a cold shower on a hot day. To cozy up by the fire after a midnight dip. To curl up in bed after a long day. To have the fortune of feeling sorrow. To be surrounded by joy. To have a life so peaceful…
You'd be surprised by how many people are in the same situation as you. Last year, before graduating, I decided to study for a second degree. A lot of worries went through my head: "I'm behind," "I'm going to be the oldest," and so on. Many of these thoughts were just excuses to stay in my comfort zone, but I pushed…
I have nothing against people who like planning and following plans. But all planning is ultimately your need to feel in control. It's a you-problem. I say problem because being good at planning nurtures a bit of entitlement within you. You move ahead in life thinking - because plans work out 70% time, the other 30%…
Found this website through my best friend. Looked very minimalistic and quite cool. Might be my new place to jot down thoughts. 300 words (I think) are just enough to bring enough clarity to thoughts yet keep them succinct. Let's see.
For about a month now, I’ve been working on writing a novel from an idea I’ve been working out for a few years. While writing a novel is something I’ve always wanted to do it is somewhat daunting. I began writing this story a few years ago as a graphic novel, but found myself discouraged when I couldn’t afford to pay…
Unplanned, unexpected moments are the most beautiful ones. Today we were walking around Aalto University without a plan, without any expectation. It was cloudy, we accidentally found this lookout spot, and then all of a sudden the cloudiness turned into one of the most beautiful sunsets of my life. Even the birds were…
Last week, I embarked on my first unplanned trip in over 8 years. I hopped on a bus, packed lightly and arrived in Kamlapur at 5 AM without a room booked. So I walked away in the opposite direction of the request bombs being dropped on me by persistent auto-drivers. I wanted to search a cheap homestay but fear of few…
Be so harsh on yourself Just keep doing the same things you did Don’t overthink thinking that they are talking about Rolex, fashion, or any materialistic topics & you have to join them. If you don’t know then just try to know rather than acting like you know Rather than focusing on the non have - why don’t try to…
exercise & study (like a language) can improve energy levels. No more “I’m tired” mentality. Say “this is hard mode” and this can affect Remove toxicity around you
Hola!
Working in IT as a software and solution architect I spend all day making rational decision or writing rational papers or reports for others to make decisions upon. I look for holes others have missed in plans or decision with the overall goal of shaping the best future for the company. In most cases the best/most…
For as long as I can remember, I've hated Sunday morning mass. I'm not a morning person, and a six day school week meant I had one day to sleep in. But Jesus had other ideas. He convinced my mother of them, and she was relentless. So I went. But unfortunately for her, most of my time in church was spent convincing…
i've been doing this: (1) reading until my brain can't take any more words [currently reading fitzgerald and thomas bernhard; loving both] (2) music a lot of music (3) write repeat that's my fun routine. my unfun routine is boat work. ha.
