Gathering thoughts…
A world of little thoughts.
June 26, 2013. Jerry Seinfeld sits for an interview with Howard Stern. Stern asks about his routine - how Jerry constantly observes, constantly hunts for material, constantly thinks about comedy. Jerry gave an answer. Fuming with surprise, Howard Stern was like - "That's being at work 24 hours a day," Stern says.…
The notion of an 'efficient' market is one that you would have probably come across often. What exactly does that mean? In most theoretical models of the modern market-economy, resources (money, goods, etc.) are deployed by their owners towards their most productive uses. Any under-utlilisation of resources creates an…
You've spent your life building a portfolio of skills. The only problem is they're currently stuck behind a dam. Let me explain: There's a wealth of expertise stuck behind your ability to articulate it in a manner that's: • clear • educational • entertaining The solution is to build a writing habit. Writing is the…
In the late 1990s, the most visited website for many Indians, especially NRIs, was samachar.com. It provided single-point, free online access to most major national newspapers. A quarter of a century later, and the online Indian news landscape is unrecognisable. Some of the best, most honest journalism in India today…
"PKM to me draws from my information landscape (e.g., lived/observed experiences, formal/informal education, ideas, etc.) - shaping my own self-improvement, decision-making, and interactions with folks. I navigate and express my life through PKM." This was part of my off-the-cuff response to the prompt - What is YOUR…
A golgappa is an emotion. For most of us who have grown up in India, regardless of which part, it is symbolic of acceptance and surrender. Surrendering to the magic of the vendor who assembles the puri and dunks it in the spiced water before handing it over to you. Magic, because we really don't know what to expect.…
This morning I watched a desert spiny lizard successfully intimidate an antelope ground squirrel. The squirrel is a delicate but scrappy creature. The lizard on the other hand is a spiny and tentative being. The squirrel lay bathing in a little patch of dust warmed by a sunbeam. He indulgently rubbed his belly and…
Financial service providers are facing a mounting challenge of sophisticated cyber attacks led by AI agents. Cybersecurity is not able to keep pace with rapid advancement of AI models. The commoners are worried about their funds deposited with financial services providers and praying that years of saving, in some…
Our current understanding of biology suggests that telomeres play a role in protecting genetic information during the replication process. During every cell division, the protective ends of every strand of DNA are shortened just a bit, protecting the important stuff from damage. If memes are analogous to genes as the…
For the past two weeks work has been quite stressful. We have this major change going through the system and I am running point. Now normally this wouldn't scare me but there is a lot of attention on this one. Ever step is being judged and reconsidered. Every day I get another earful of caution. Don't make a wrong…
Is by putting the first focus towards the other party Genuinely interested in what she is saying And reply to that sentence “Hahaha is that why you put Bryan beside my seat” That’s a sign of intelligence. A social intelligence Because you’re relating HER in the picture Not at all YOU She talks you relate HERS So is…
Having a clutter of possibilities is a burden. What once was hopeful, is now just stuff to wade through when looking for what you want. Items and ideas lying around waiting for the right circumstances to be used keep you from seeing what to use now. With less, opportunities are more likely to become actions. If you…
A movie is like a person. Not everyone likes any one person. Not everyone understands that person. But there are always people who love that person despite all his inherent flaws and understands why he is the way he is and accept it all. That is enough for that one person.
one day we will no longer understand proust, just as we don't understand beowulf but we will always understand liszt and his liebestraum.
I write software. I love software. I think software can be beautiful. So then why does it sometimes feel as though software doesn't matter? Perhaps it is because a program by itself is inert. It requires an interpreter to run. This is also true in every day life. A recipe by itself is not edible, unless it's printed…
I've been wanting to write regularly for a bit now but haven't started. I don't know if I things worth saying is part of the reason. Other is procrastination. I hope no one reads these for a bit. It's odd when you realise people you know in real life follow your twitter and you do wtf. dont. Something like that ig.…
In the morning the weather was rainy-pouring, actually. For a moment ı wouldnt be able to go to the library but luckily it cleared up later. Now,I gonna use my english. I am learning english, there for I am going to the library. sometimes, I am reading book there and there is a free tea and yummy cake (thank you…
Watching the debate on whether we ought not to trust mainstream media between Matt Taibbi and Douglas Murray for the motion, and Michelle Goldberg and Malcolm Gladwell against, I was struck by the ineptitude of the arguments put forth by the team against, particularly by Gladwell. On multiple occasions he insinuated…
I'm almost 51 and my body has taken this fifth decade to declare that it requires attention, consistent healthy habits and quite possibly some medication to prop up the system.
I kind of want to read Holzfällen twice, in German then in English because I feel that the voice is completely different. perhaps I should read Murakami again, in Japanese. or try to... Philip Gabriel's translations of Murakami is such a special voice and I really really enjoy it but what does Murakami actually sound…
Death is a known factor that disrupts all projections. The only problem is we don't know where it fits in the timelines of our lives. Today a friend left the office early. I joked to call out his half day. He smiled, winked and said he's just tired. He promised he'll pick the rest up tomorrow. He will never come back…
In the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic, the tech industry made two inferences that broadly informed strategy: - Software is now going to eat the world at a massively increased rate - Many people now like to work remotely and have a better work/life balance The industry accepted this as a package deal: fine,…
We reset ourselves by feeling like we've reclaimed control of our environment. Most of us have learned repeatable behaviours that help us feel normal. I wrote about how a bath resets me in a piece earlier. For some, it could be cleaning or cooking for another person. Some people maintain to-do lists. I've also heard…
Focusing on work can be quite a challenge when your brain is racing like a little engine. More and more thoughts and desires try to derail your workflow. How can you catch those thoughts, suspend distractions, and transform valuable ideas into something productive when they keep coming? Having a solid plan and…
i try so hard every day i tell me i’m right in every way my heart doesn’t dare to hope so it pulls strings and hangs them in ways that paint a picture of you as ‘nothing, buts’ and for weeks there’s emptiness and abyss and space and void until, there you are, emerging and yet this time you are stronger tanner eyes…
...she, anyway, doesn't know me anymore. we ended things. i couldn't stand being around her. it doesn't mean that i loved her any less. i loved her more than she loved herself. she loved me less than she loved the version of me she wanted. you see...there was our problem. i had brought this to her attention as well.…
Hello, As a kid I spent many hours gaming and one of my favorite genre was "RPG" (Role Playing) because these game were open ended and played out based on the choices that the player makes based on internal & external considerations. The effects of these choices are consequential. Everything in a good RPG effects the…
The dark elf is a political type. He (and it's almost always a he) is a member of the privileged class, either by birth or by wits. All the opportunities for success were made available to him. The social graces, mannerisms, and noble lies of the elite were inculcated in him from a young age. All of the social…
Similar or familiar. Like-minded. Something old and new. Wabi Sabi. Perfection. A gift from me to you. Happy memories. Warm fuzzies. Like a nod to the golden. Best friends. Your favourite jumper. Positivity. Feeling eternally soulful. Confidence in dressing. Lace up. Your humble tribe. Where kindness shared, is…
To understand a system, you must define its boundaries, forming its own “universe.” While we often think of individuals as separate from their environment, in reality, they are deeply interconnected. Evolutionary constraints highlight this relationship: organisms are shaped by and respond to their surroundings. The…
Encouragement is something everyone needs, but not everyone has, and it’s a crucial part of our development. For me, encouragement is like a gentle push or a small gust of wind that propels a boat. It provides direction and a bit of force, but ultimately, it’s up to the boat to decide how to use this wind to sail.…
UPDATE: on plagiarism in book - https://christinaluo.substack.com/p/writer-enough In February 2023, there was a prompt topic - Celebrating Tiago - in the BASB (Building a Second Brain) Circle community as Cohort 16 was closing. EXCERPT "To commemorate an end to this era, we would like to invite all members to share…
Scene 1 Driver rang the door bell for car keys. Father goes to the main door and is off in the car with the driver. He is back in 5 minutes. I ask mother where did he go that he is back so quickly. He never goes for morning walks. Mother says he went with the driver to refuel the car so that the driver can now go run…
Sometimes when I look at something that I have written, I can't believe I thought of these words. These words, they just come to me. I have to put pen on paper and give it form. I feel like a messenger at times. The universe or some cosmic force whispering to me. Sometimes these words don't feel like mine. I never…
I’ve been wanting to get better at giving accurate time estimates—how long it will take to get something done, or how long it will take to get somewhere. As a kid, this wasn’t a problem for me. My mom would make sure we were 30 minutes early to everything. Sitting in the doctor’s office because we arrived half an hour…
I finally jumped onto the startup bandwagon towards the end of 2021 at the time when offices were sending emails to their employees about opening up. It occurred to me then that if I did not do this, then the only choice left to me would be to go back to the corporate world. I decided to start my own corporate world…
This situation has helped me to understand one of the most important truths in life. We do not deserve to be happy. Both deservedness and happiness are human inventions that try to project a fictitious vital image that never materializes and, therefore, generates unhappiness. To explain this point we do not have to…
I love the phrase "I'm so lucky." No matter the circumstances, every time I say, "I'm so lucky," I find countless positive things in a day, no matter what happens. Our van door fell off, we had the worst food ever, or I had a headache. But on those same days, we drove through Scotland, stayed in front of beautiful…
We like to think of ourselves as rational decision-makers who are persuaded to accept arguments and ideas on the basis of logical merit. This is laughably divergent from how things really work. The idea itself that humans are rational decision-makers has no basis in empirical observation; it is just some wishful…
Western culture is suppressing it's animal nature and that's creating a dangerous shadow. That's what Friedrich Nietzsche wrote in his first book "The birth of tragedy". I'd love to tell you how to express your animal nature in a healthy way. But I don't know. Here's what I do know; Tragedy was born in theater plays.…
Today we had a lawyer friend of my dad and his 19 year old son who is about to study law visiting. In our conversation we started discussing AI and the future. This not only highlighted my deep immersion in the tech world but also surprised and somewhat triggered me by seeing once again just how naive some educated…
Why do you always “huh” and assume what people say. Don’t do that Focus on what people say to the 100% and - actually ask & listen very very carefully. Even if you’re doing anything or not doing anything. Don’t become lifeless and mindless zombie Just have own thought and critical thinking - think clearly before…
Apparently sleeping is really good for when you are sick, so thats what I'm gonna go do now, I'll tell you guys how it goes or if it works :) byeeeee
Yesterday, I sent my Mac to repair, cause I spilled soy sauce on it UPS :) and I have been writing my nicheless without any corrections or improvements from Chat GPT, which now feels very weird... its crazy that a year ago I didn't even use Chat GPT and now I can't imagine not having it in my life, it just makes my…
I haven't written anything anywhere in a long time, my articulation of sentences is poor, use of punction is very poor, I don't know how to write. want to get better but i dont know how.
There are myriad of ways in which one can claim that a person has lived a good life. After all, isn't what we are all aiming for ? To have a "good life". Obviously, the definitions of the same may differ. It maybe defined by certain achievements, familial bonds or a hundred other ways. But this writer just wants to…
