How to be an animal in a healthy way?
Western culture is suppressing it's animal nature and that's creating a dangerous shadow.
That's what Friedrich Nietzsche wrote in his first book "The birth of tragedy".
I'd love to tell you how to express your animal nature in a healthy way.
But I don't know.
Here's what I do know;
Tragedy was born in theater plays.
A hero that wants order.
And fights chaos.
That's tragedy.
Chaos is embodied by the Greek god Dionysus.
Order is embodied by the Greek god Apollo.
According to Nietzsche - ancient Greek culture had a healthy balance between both gods.
Dionysus was appreciated for being the god of wine, orgies, irrationality, the senses, ecstasy, instinct, intoxication, chaos, and the formless.
Apollo was appreciated for being the god of light, war, order, rationality, restraint, culture, distance and form.
They were BOTH appreciated.
Until...
Those damn philosophers started to believe they could conquer everything with their rationality.
And yes, that got us to the moon. Thanks Apollo!
But...
There's this other half of ourselves that we neglected.
That animal nature.
In touch with it's senses.
Searching for orgies and intoxication.
Being irrational and following his instinct.
that's not appreciated in western culture.
Thou shalt be rational!
Thou shalt be sober!
Thou shalt be cultured!
Our animal side is being suppressed.
It comes to the surface in a raw and primal form.
Untrained and unappreciated.
It has to express!
So it finds a way out.
Addiction. Porn. Crime.
But that's not the essence of Dionysus.
That's an unappreciated source of enormous power!
How do we guide this power?
How do we appreciate this Dionysian side of ourselves?
So that we can harness it's creative force.
So that we release ourselves from it's unhealthy shadow?
So that we can experience ecstasy?
In a healthy way.
