Come for the music, stay for the artist
If you've read my last post, you know that I've been obsessed with Kanye for the past few weeks.
It's pretty much the only thing I listen to and have been greatly inspired by his album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy.
But yesterday, when I was re-listening to MBDTF for the nth time, I enjoyed it way more than the previous times and was curious to why?
I realized that because I've been so deep into understanding the process Kanye went through to make this album and also learning more about Kanye as an artist, I grew more attached to the album than I had been before.
This is how you create a fandom. You release dope music, people start listening to it, and it's when they start googling to see who you are as a person and they realize they fuck with you, that's when you get a fan.
That's why I love when artists do interviews or when seeing them live, they give a bit of a backstory to their songs. Every increment of detail they give, the more you get attached to the artist and their songs.
This is what any brand should be doing. Lore/Storytelling keeps/attracts hardcore fans and good product is how you introduce your brand to new people.
You need a dope product for people to discover you, but you need to tell your story for people to love it and stay.
