Zen 5 or x86 catching up to Apple's ARM
This PPT from Jim Keller is suggesting roughly 30% of Performance increase with a slightly increase in clock speed. We are talking about ~23% of IPC increase.
If we were to fit this number into Geekbench 6.1, assuming linear scaling of performance with clock speed, you get about ~2250 Single Core Performance at 3.5Ghz. Compared to 2500 in Apple A16.
We should have A17's number in a few months time. I wonder if Apple could squeeze out any more IPC. It is exciting times in X86 land. Zen 5 represent the first major rework arguably since Zen 1. Going with Apple's direction of Super Wide Front End. And it will likely take them another 1 or 2 iteration ( Zen 6 and Zen 7 ) before they fully optimise and balance it for x86. Meanwhile Apple has been iterating its design for 5-6 years and counting.
One of the interesting point in the graph not often talked about is how the pref / watt of those Tenstorrent CPU. We are talking about 10% reduction of Zen 5 at ~20% reduction in Watts. Which means roughly similar to current Apple A16 already.
I wonder if Tenstorrent will license those design IP for others to use.
