AI PC Era or AI of iPhone era
Jensen said it is the AI of iPhone era. I was a little bit sceptical at first. Now I think it is true, may be for slightly different reason than Jensen's.
We continue to see LLM / Generative AI improvement every single weeks or months. And most expect we have at least another 5 years of these improvements. While we may or will hit a plateau some day and require new way of thinking AI. There is no deny that current AI is bringing value to every day user and will continue to improve.
This is a first time in a very long time the PC will need additional hardware power for these features. SSD was the last major performance improvement that is must have. And ignoring M1 the last major lead forward in x86 PC CPU was Sandy Bridge. My current early 2015 MacBook Pro is running on a Dual Core i5 and a fast SSD. Which is still faster than 95% of Chromebook or low-end notebook today and likely next year.
Those AI features would require NPU, GPU, CPU upgrade, along with baseline 16GB RAM, as we have been stuck with 8GB Memory for a long time. A SSD that is even faster for potential off loading of AI which Apple is working on. All in all this is a potential upgrade for ALL the PC user, that is 2B of them and possibly more.
Along with Smartphone, iPad, Server. The requirement and usage of AI will be enough to push these technology company forward for another 5 - 10 years. Enough to fund TSMC leading edge node for another 10 years.
And surprisingly, if Microsoft missed the boat on Smartphone, they may been well ahead on AI.
Exciting times.
