Who cares?
I'll start by saying this is might be a controversial take. I'm not here to stir the pot, but I'm here to try and keep my own sanity.
This past week brought a lot of noise around Elon Musk taking over Twitter. I must have listened to 10 podcasts, glanced at hundreds of tweets, and probably missed thousands of more takes about how good/bad/glorious/evil this all is. I found myself being pulled in. What does it mean? For democracy? For truth? For free speech? For hate speech?
I then paused and asked myself an important – albeit selfish – question: what does it mean for me?
After a quick run through of all the opinions I heard or read over the past week, I came to a humbling conclusion: it doesn't mean anything to me. Whether Elon is in charge of Twitter or Zuck is the overlord of Meta, doesn't actually matter.
I often forget that I have a choice (a privileged position to be in, I acknowledge). I have a choice about what I listen to, what I watch, what I allow to consume my every thought. I (should) have control over my attention and what I give my energy to.
For the better part of the last week, I gave my attention to doom or glory about Twitter and what was in store for the future of America. Today – as I ironically give my attention to this by declaring I am NOT giving my attention to this – I choose me.
In a world that pulls me into everyone else's problems, I choose my own. I will worry about my troubles. I will glory about my joys. If I'm active on Twitter, that's my choice.
If I leave - who cares?
