Talking about Money
On a recent trip with my friends, I asked them if they were ok telling me how much they were worth i.e. how much money they had in the bank. During the trip, I had skirted around the question by asking what their "number" was. But that evening, I just asked if they'd be ok telling me.
I've been thinking a lot about money and the role it plays. A lot of our life revolves around money, especially in your late 20s and 30s. From jobs we pursue to lifestyles we live, money is at the heart of it all. And despite it's central role, it's still taboo to talk about money. This has only resulted in us being highly "illiterate" when it comes to money.
I won't say I know it all, but I'm significantly more knowledgeable about money as compared to a few years ago. But I was figuring things out myself - thank god for Youtube. I never spoke to my friends about it, who were probably also trying to figure it out at the same time.
We spend so much time thinking about money - at least I do - and the ability to discuss this openly with someone similar could be liberating and helpful. Especially with people who don't really care about how much money you have aka your friends (this may not be true for all "friends")
I think close friends ought to talk more about money with each other. There's a risk that this could corrupt the friendship but the benefit is having someone similar you you, who you can trust, to talk to about one of the biggest causes of stress in life.
Me and my friends spent an hour discussing this and we broadly agreed. However, we never shared a number that night.
