Apple supporting JPEG XL
In the history of Personal Computing, somehow it is always Apple that chooses the best technology. Microsoft tried JPEG XR, Windows Media Video or VC-1, or Windows Media Audio. With Google it was VP8, VP9 and AV1 along with WebP and AVIF. None of them were invented before they had something better. They were there for strategic, or business / pricing reasons. And both of them tried to push the standard via some of their market monopoly.
JPEG XL was clearly better than AVIF in many / most cases when there are direct comparison. And offer many other features which AVIF couldn't even compare.
Generally speaking, adopting a Codec is or should be a long and conservative process. Apple usually being very late to it and Google is jumping on the hype whenever they could. This time around it was Apple who made the first move, out of all the big tech companies.
I am glad some people are finally waking up to AOM's hypocrisy. I hope there is still a chance where VVC could shine.
