The Irony of the self development Hippie
Why do many new age hippies interpret the Buddha's teachings in the wrong way?
The moment the Buddha was dying, people were lining up for him.
He was sitting under the bodhi tree where he reached his enlightenment.
Ready to leave his physical body behind.
A man appeared from the crowd and tried to ask the Buddha a question.
One of the Buddhas friends held the man back.
He told the man not to disturb the Buddha on is death bed.
The Buddha told his friend it's okay, to let the stranger come to him.
Even on his death bed the Buddha gave himself to others.
Selfless.
Placing others needs above his own.
Understanding that the universe doesn't have a center.
It's not about him.
Buddha taught us to be kind, compassionate, honest and non-judgemental to self and others.
The new age hippie is on the right path. Getting in touch with his feelings, intuition and dreams.
The problem here is that the buddha's teachings come from a collectivist culture.
A culture where you are not only you.
You are your family, religion and village.
We ctrl + C & ctrl + V these 5000 year old teachings into a culture where the most important thing is to grow yourself as an individual.
You can hear the new age hippie whisper..
"Follow YOUR authentic expression"
"Life is about unfolding YOUR potential"
"Create YOUR own dreams"
"Follow YOUR intuition"
"Listen to YOUR deepest desires"
Here's my advice for your development.
subtract the Y
make it about our development.
How?
Learn sales and marketing.
There's nothing that gets you out of your own petty little perspective more than learning business.
The Buddha was a businessman, constantly asking himself "How can I help others?"
