the art of distraction, and adhd
Tug of war can be a fun game, except when it's happening in your head, between your focus and your distractions. I cannot sit undistracted doing a tedious work for long, but put on a whole catalogue of good cinema and you will see me infuse into the ground, like becoming a part of the ship in Davy Jones' Flying Dutchmen.
Attention Deficit is one part of the problem, it's a ticking clock that drives you insane, making you think of all the random stuff to do instead of the task in front. You sit down to finish an assignment and suddenly you are thirsty, you want to take a shower, you want to check your email, you wonder about a highly neglected topic and want to catch up. Everything but the task.
You want to read a philosopher but you think you should blog about your disrupted focus machinery, and you're here typing.
Hyperactivity Disorder is the second part, highly powerful but rarely useful. Want to watch me build an app that no one asked for by neglecting my main work? Boom! 3 hours straight without a break. Want to watch me go down a Wikipedia rabbit hole on esoteric topics and nuclear deterrence? It's 2 am and I haven't had dinner! The HD part of my share is spent in most useless places while the AD part sabotages my career and personal life!
ADHD is like a busy town square inside your head, full of noises that drown your authority. It is painful. Awfully painful. Like, here's a simple task you can finish and your life will be exponentially improved...but fuck no. You just can't, like trying to drive a tank through mud.
It's been called laziness or “not trying hard enough” but it is just executive dysfunction.
