One week until I am 43 -- what do I do now?
My birthday is February 14. I have a week to decide what gift I should ask for that is going to define my life.
Snowboard pants? A raspberry pi to run a Bitcoin full node? My wife asked me what she should nudge the kids to get me: post-apocalyptic graphic novels or a young adult lit book in Spanish. These are the ideas of a man lost at sea without a rudder, or perhaps just someone is satisfied and fulfilled with what he has.
I am on the back nine of life.I have only been 20 years removed from college. I hope to have 40 more. I am just learning how to snowboard, speak Spanish, and tickle the ivories. I have only known my wife for 9 years, and my kids for 5 and 7. It seems very tragic that the people that I love so dearly I have only just begun to get to know and won't be able to see them grow old. Perhaps I shouldn't tempt fate :(
There is nothing that I want for my birthday. I can understand why my dad always wanted a tie or some socks. In the grand scheme of things, I can buy whatever I want, except for more time with my family, which is exactly what I need.
The hackernewsletter had an Ask HN: "Best Lecture Series" comment that I read. I immediately opened 10 new 20-hour lectures on everything from Pottery to Physics. I am not sure why. I get restless when I think about any idle time. As if life must be exhaustive or it was wasted. Instead of opening those 10 lecture tabs, I should have spent 10 more minutes with my kids, tonight. Ten more minutes of them being 5 and 7. Better choices tomorrow.
