Nothing Much
My parents video call me everyday.
It could sound like I am complaining but that's not it.
I like that they do. Most days I do pick up the call regardless of if I am out, at a party or at a friend's place.
Usually, the conversation goes as follows-
where are you (when I'm out)
did you eat?
what's happening?
what else is up?
say more?
And I tend to reply with a "NM" (nothing much) on most days.
Sometimes I wonder if I'm being horrible by having nothing to share with someone who is excited to hear about me.
But on most days, there isn't much to say except talk about the weather, what food we had and so on.
It feels nice that they won't stop asking me what's going on despite of my drab nothing much responses.
I love the reassurance.
Even when I go back home, my "nothing much" is a constant.
I usually don't talk much at home either. It feels quite alright because at those times they're just happy I am back.
In fact its become a way for me to feel comfortable with new people I meet too.
Does it work if I have nothing much to say?
At times it comes across as rude and uppity as some people have told me before and so I thought maybe writing that there's nothing personal there could help.
But maybe my take here comes from a place of security.
Knowing that my parents or friends will always be excited to hear me talk also creates space for my nothing much.
And I feel there's something here for those of you who feel uneasy in social environments - may be the trick is in finding people who are okay when you say nothing much?
