Life is colourful. But...
We're taught to practice with only one colour.
We're taught to choose only one niche to excel in life.
Jack of all trades is master of none, right!?
But, did you know the original version of this quote has another line?
It says, "Jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one."
It was a compliment, not an insult.
This also reminds me of the "Divergent Trilogy" by Veronica Roth.
I followed my curiosity and graduated with Masters in Physics. I soon realized that I have other interests so I set out to explore them.
I joined as a high school teacher for math & science. I enjoyed teaching but soon realized my old love for computers and programming.
I joined a diploma course and got a certificate in Big Data. I immediately found an internship in my own city. I was ecstatic! I can practice this craft without leaving the comfort of my home.
I worked for an year and started realising most of my work was not as challenging as I expected it to be.
That's when I started writing and curating a newsletter. I soon realised my love for writing and how I wanted to be a writer when I left high-school. I immediately quit my job to explore my interests.
That love for curation led to me working as a Growth Marketer for an early stage start-up that helps creators monetize their work.
Sometimes, I still dream of working:
- In hospitality industry
- As an owner of a themed café
- As a digital artist
- As an interior designer
And, I want to be so many other things! Almost all at once.
Life is full of colours. But, we're taught to work with only one colour.
How boring!?
