It's snowing in CT
Well, it finally started. Winter is upon us. After a long day of 30-degree weather, we finally received our first dusting of snow and I couldn't be happier.
I was born in Hawai'i. And up until we moved to Simsbury, I fancied myself a beach boy, a beach bum, a beach something. Whatever the case, my paradise was the sun drenched island of Oahu.
I absolutely love the beach. The stench of the ocean, the sound of the rolling waves, and the therapeutic, yet sometimes uncomfortable, heat of the sun baking my skin for hours.
I love everything about it. Very little clothing, no shoes, no technology out in the water. It's one of the few places we can get near to our pre-industrial, pre-technological selves. There is a reason why countries close to the equator have the lowest GDP. Why would one want to be "productive" when there is so much joy to be had outside playing in nature.
The beach bum left when we committed to living in the New England state of Connecticut. I decided after the first brutal winter of staying indoors that I would learn to love the season or die trying.
I purchased a snowboard, the proper clothing and attire; I purchased the season pass. Being twenty minutes away from Ski Sundown, I set off to love snowboarding. And it worked. I was hooked from the jump. The first year, I used the pass about 35 times. I would drive to the slopes over a long lunch. I would go a second time after the kids were asleep. I couldn't get enough of it.
And now I am roping in the kids, and hopefully the wife. You know, I am not yet used to the cold, but man I do love winter! Surfs up.
