I relapsed on my digital diet...
In 2020, I had this grand plan and it was unorthodox, but effective. I traded in my Android smart phone for a feature phone. I stopped reading the news religiously. I started to write more. And by hand. I would take notes on pen and paper writing in cursive to maximize my recall and memory. It all worked.
I started reading for pleasure! Eeek!
It was a beautiful couple of years. Though I was still watching the price of Bitcoin, that was okay because it was headed to the moon and I was paper "rich."
And I had continued until this year.
This year, and little by slowly, I began to stop doing these "hard" habits and opted for the "cheap thrills" and easy pleasure.
I lost my feature phone and picked up an Iphone on the cheap. This was great because I was able to take meetings in the car, while doing errands. What liberation! But I also stopped learning how to navigate around my town and state. I began to dive into podcasts which was interesting, but it was like a mental doughnut, the full pleasure for realized after 30 minutes, no long term gains.
With the crypto crash, fear took over. I went back to doom scrolling reddit and twitter, even reactivating accounts and posting. For the last two months, I have been less productive -- outside of my working hours -- and less fulfilled and less happy.
I quit learning Spanish, which was a joy, and I stopped getting quality sleep.
It's time to go cold turkey on the digital again. It's time for me to stop listening to garbage and scanning text. Time to get back to the handwriting, writing, and reading. Time to get back to doing the hard things that brought such fulfillment and joy.
