College is dead.
This morning I read an open letter from the CSM department at UMass discussing the universities change to it's vision statement. Once again, we find that virtue signalling, mob mentality, politics, and nonsense have converged to take the soul our of the research based facility and turn it into another symbol of woke signalling.
My concern is that colleges used to be bastions of the most anti-racist policy ever known to man: the pursuit of knowledge, and now they seem to be extremely expensive camps for social activists to kinda, sorta, possibly get an education that may or may not be useful in the world.
As was been quick to be pointed out, college has always been a place where this pursuit has had to find its way through the moral or religious lense. After all, the Ivy League certainly has its religious roots, and I don't heretical pursuits would get much love.
I am also not necessarily against this. Perhaps it's a good thing. Perhaps its one big step of social justice (which is good) and/or the next nail in the coffin for the current collegiate system (which is better).
Perhaps its hypocritical. I don't want my kids to go to college unless it's for a STEM degree. And I don't think my kids need to go to college if it's certain stem degrees.
The future cannot be the linked to slaving away ones youth, to get into a school that could educate 400,000 but has decided to only educate 4000, so that the Sheepskin effect and continue. College cannot become a gatekeeping device for basic jobs that require little or know brain activity.
My hope is that college becomes a relic of the past. To be replaced by Youtube, Udemy, or...MOOCs,
