Attacked by reality, not so much this time.
It's the first week back at my job after a two week vacation. I had a nice Monday: no meetings, just checking email, code reviews. Then, on Tuesday, the onslaught begins. Meetings, meetings, Slack, distractions, multiple threads, dropping balls all over the place. Feeling dumb. Here we go again.
I got some feedback from my manager who was very happy with my work this past year, which was one helluva year let me tell you. I needed two weeks vacation! This year we are going to work on letting go more. Let's delegate! Let's see what happens when I let other people lead! It's time for me to concentrate on learning the business at a higher level of abstraction.
Now this does scare me a little bit. I don't like getting away from the keyboard. I love coding. But I also really love working with people and building software together. And while I will get to be an individual contributor to some degre on smaller things, I am needed in the meetings talking about how the bigger pieces of the puzzle fit together.
I guess this is what scaling a career track feels like.
I don't have to say goodbye to the IDE, but I may not have as much contact with the code as I used to during the day. I will have to visit at night and carve out some special time.
In fact I am launching my first Next.js + Firebase app as we speak... howtotip.me -- in a few weeks. I digress.
In any event, I am really looking forward to all of the challenges I will meet head-on, this year. The professional and personal growth, the thrill of victory, the humbling of defeat.
Here's to a wonderful 2023!
