Aren't you sick of this?
As a person in their late 20s, aren't you sick of being constantly told that you're not good enough?
It may not be the case for all, but I am sure most of us don't feel good enough about anything we do. I am happy to be corrected.
Every other day I see some new development or a new business propping up to tell me that whatever I am capable of isn't worthwhile.
I bet it's getting tiring to resist it even.
One of the ways we tend to feel inadequate would be in regard to careers. Another way would either be looks or dating or both.
Most of us prioritize the former over the latter. The general consensus is that focusing on a career is never bad.
But I fear that we're falling into the trap of the worst forms of competition. The kind of competition that doesn't improve us in meaningfully.
I notice a general trend amongst people my age to "upskill." While networking, upskilling, and gaining credibility are all necessary, we are in dire need of focus.
I don't mean focus in the context of attention. I mean focus as the ability to build a single defensible skill.
In order to fix the inadequacy mentioned earlier, I feel we're trading off long-term insightful development for short-term feel-good shifts.
In simpler terms, we are falling for the chameleon world.
The ingredients we need to do professionally well in life have remained constant since always.
Writing, computing basic math, working in teams, pursuing either one or two of our interests, and being able to make life decisions independently is what all seemingly complex skills boil down to.
I feel more than any skill we need to build our ability to be persistent at whatever we pick.
