Why is it hard to ask the question?
Asking is a vital part of communication and connecting with others.
As a professional, I had no difficulty asking questions to clarify a situation. I wanted to make the best decision possible.
In social settings, I find it difficult to ask questions.
Do you find yourself falling victim to these situations?
We assume others understand our intentions or we understand theirs. I missed an opportunity to join my brother on an outing when I didn’t ask about the schedule. He assumed I had no interest.
We assume our need for clarification makes us look foolish. I recently came close to declining a seat for dinner because I didn’t understand the seating arrangements. I caught my blunder in time.
We're afraid to show our lack of knowledge. In my art class, a tablemate suggested the grid method. I had no idea what she was talking about. I didn’t ask.
We’re not being active listeners and don’t want to admit it. I can't count the number of times my mind has wandered from a conversation. Admitting it shows weakness.
We don't want to offend others. My friend looks like she's lost weight. How do I ask that without offending her?
In each situation above, I missed an opportunity to be me and start a conversation.
There's no shame in the reasons for not asking. Shame lies in allowing yourself to be the victim of not asking.
If we know why we're not asking, effort and practice can help us learn to handle these situations.
Asking, like other conversation skills, can be learned.
I have work to do.
