Why I read?
I read every day. It has become automatic so that even in the busiest of days, I will take out the Kindle on my phone and read for 10-20 mins. It is one of those seminal activities that has given me meaning to my life, improved the quality of living.
I picked up reading seeing a erudite colleague of mine, which made me also want to be seen as interesting. I think I always craved for this sense of validation for intellectual heft right from my childhood, where i naturally got drawn to admiring Leo'da'vinci and desiring to be called the Polymath, some day, when I first understood the word's meaning. While over the years the urge to showboat knowledge has reduced significantly and I have realized the introvert in me gets a greater kick out of the intellectual joy reading gives me.
I have also realized there are different ways to heighten the reading pleasure, one is reading different books on the same topic, and using writing to solidify the understanding of the reading..
To end this, reading is an effective part of my life, I read for the constant source of new ideas it injects it with me. It expands the boundary of my knowledge and awareness over different topics and different intellectual pursuits, which I know I can easily access over rest of my life, one book at a time. I don't read much of fiction, because I think subconsciously I am biased to think fiction does not give me the intellectual superiority. I hope to actively change this bias and be inclusive to also read fiction regularly.
