Train Yourself To Find Gratitude In The Ordinary
I never fail to have something to be grateful for.
How can this be? My life is ordinary. I have a good life, with a home, food, and health. My ordinary doesn't look like your ordinary. For all of us many days look almost identical.
You can only write the same thing in your gratitude journal so many times, right?
The correct answer to that question is no. You can be grateful for the same things in your life over and over.
Or you can train yourself to find gratitude in the ordinary.
I watched Bill Keaggy’s TEDx Talk on finding attention, mindfulness, and creativity in the ordinary around us. Keaggy is the author of Sad Chairs. He explains how Noticing Walks develop these skills and present a way to help our brain process the external world. The ordinary can be beautiful.
Noticing Walks also help you find gratitude in the ordinary.
During my walk today, I was grateful for:
The sun warming my back.
Being able to remember my neighbor’s first name.
The beautiful contrast of the bare tree branches against the blue sky.
The opportunity to go outside for some exercise on a beautiful day.
Being grateful for the ordinary makes every day a little less ordinary.
