Then again, why do I like Nabokov?
I certainly don’t expect everyone to like /Lolita/
So what’s the matter with me not liking others that many like?
I suppose I just want to know what there is to like!
So what do I like about Nabokov? He has big dick energy, that’s the first thing. And he’s funny about it. And he creeps me out in the right ways. It’s a mixture of sensations which Do It For Me.
I suppose I enjoy laughing and smirking. And I enjoy testing boundaries of right and wrong, good and evil. I like that Hitchcock feeling of rooting for the bad guy. I like an unexpected and honest sentence.
But could I understand if someone didn’t like those things? Sure. Could I understand if someone didn’t even SEE those things in Nabokov? Sure.
I am reminded of Borge’s Library of Babel. I must remember that for all I can read in my lifetime, there might as well be infinitely many books out there, and that I am on the search for the books which do something for me. And the quickest way to get to them is to get rid of the other ones, which will surely outnumber the Ultimate Selection. I just have to be careful not to toss out any of the real deal, but even if I do, as long as I have something to read, I can just keep plowing ahead. If it should ever come to it that I’ve ransacked the whole archive then I can start all over again, as nothing ever really did get thrown out.
