The asian way (parents edition)
Never hearing that you are loved,
but having the fridge full of food
—the Asian way.
Never receiving an apology when they are wrong,
but instead being asked if you are hungry or want some fruit
—the Asian way.
Being pushed to follow their dream life instead of yours,
but receiving financial support
—the Asian way.
Facing constant criticism,
but brag about you to others
—the Asian way.
Being harsh to you to build toughness and independence,
but having your clothes washed every time you visit home
—the Asian way.
Being told not to express your opinion because "kids don't speak,"
but being expected to continue the family business
—the Asian way.
Not being allowed to have a boyfriend until you graduate university,
but hearing “next time your boyfriend is here, we’ll make this dish for him” at every meal
—the Asian way.
My Asian parents might differ from yours, but one thing holds true: they went through the same parenting style and, just like us, they are learning to be human and to be better parents. Their journey as parents continues for the rest of their lives, so let's help them grow.
