Permanence
We're so obsessed with the idea of permanence--we now fully believe in it. So much so, that it might as well be a new religion.
Apart from words like 'forever' and 'endless' being used to describe our 'undying' affection/dislike for one another we've started to manifest permanence in other ways.
Mostly by taking life for granted.
We only remember our mortality when we're at a disadvantage.
We realize our insignificance only when we're not in control--when life gets out of hand.
Sometimes I think we're taught it. By 'it' I mean the urge to forget about how short life really is. Maybe it's a universal fear, something that comes with being human.
There's a certain humility that comes with being mortal though (only when we're fully conscious of it of course), and I think I'm grateful for it. Mortality. It brings about our ingenuity as people. As human beings.
We pretend like nothing can be bigger than us, until it actually is.
Imagine if we'd just make it a point, every day, to somehow remember how unpredictable life is.
At the risk of sounding too banal, I'll still say
Time is precious. Make it count.
