Mutton, Chicken, Prawn and a Wedding
As a certified foodie, I rarely pass on an opportunity to celebrate a life event which does not involve food! So when a long overdue conversation with a friend turns into a call where she tells me about her daughter's plan to get married, albeit with six weeks notice, I figure the Mother of the Bride could do with a couple of stiff whiskies and a mutton fry to deal with all those mixed emotions!
Thus begins our impromptu Thursday evening meat fest!
A menu is planned in all earnestness, a Kerala style chicken curry, Manglorean style prawn sookha and a heavily spiced Andhra mutton curry. The planned accompaniment are home made dosas to soak up the gravy and masalas.
The evening centers around my friends telling me how their daughter sprung it on them, that she and her boyfriend decided to get married. The narration has twists, turns, beautiful coincidences, visa applications as presiding co-stars before becoming a fairy tale.
An inter-country and inter-faith wedding with all the bells and whistles of a Karan Johar movie no less! So much excitement to look forward to!
Even the most spectacular meal will pale in comparison to the humor and love that emerges as the evening progresses. A smart copywriter would have enough content to write a 13 episode mini series.
The Punjabi in me assumes that the best way to heighten my friend's excitement would be to ply her with large spoons of the mutton, chicken and prawn. And on the flip side, to lessen her shock, ensure that her whiskies are double pours, and offer to host a Mother of the Bride Champagne brunch. We have so far finished two of the three. A date for the celebratory Champagne Brunch is still to be fixed.
And I can't wait!
