Gen Z
The protests in India, which began mid June under the label of CJP or Cockroach Janta Party, took a life of its own when Gen Z made their aspirations known on social media using instagram in full force.
This combination of youth, frustration, joblessness, directionless leadership and a bleak future was a recipe for disaster. Amplify this movement and emotion ten times and it became something that many of us were proud of.
A generation that has grown up on social media and pretty much living their entire lives on full public display, did not think twice before bringing their protests to mainstream and the rest of us started to watch. Our first reactions were one of awe which then converted to respect.
Laced with intelligent humor, self deprecating quips and slick content, Gen Z started to put out strong messages of wanting accountability and leadership from the elected ruling party representatives.
I was personally fascinated with how well put together their ask was, complete with relevant comedy thrown in for good measure. Reminded me of the Amol Palekar, Uttam Kumar genre of movies. Where there is a strong socio-economic message that gets conveyed using comedy.
So Gen Z got into action with the use of reels, comedians doing stand-up, placards made with the strong messages and then made sure they got in front of the right television camera crews.
Their ability to lend the subtle brand of humor to even the most stressful situations was a master class in communication. They displayed remarkable poise, confidence and leadership.
As a citizen of India, I feel extremely proud to know that the next rung of citizens and leadership in India will emerge from this Generation. As a country, we are surely in safe hands.
