Lima — first impressions
The optimal number of imperfections in a city is not zero.
I just spent 24 hours in Lima, and I think it comes pretty close to finding the right balance between organisation and chaos. Combine that with a friendly people, an incredible cliff-edged coastline and world class cuisine, and you've got yourself a city you want to live in.
There are parts of this place that look just like a Spanish city. Other parts that resemble a highway in Gurgaon. And a coastline that looks like no other place on earth.
Nothing here is perfect, but a lot of it comes close. And that keeps you excited for what's around the corner. Like an addict, you keep walking. Beautiful architecture, but sometimes covered by dust. A stunning surfer-friendly coastline, but with freezing waters. Traffic lights that always work, but are mostly ignored. Universal footpaths, with the occasional dog poop. And the food. Okay the food is perfect.
Sterility is boring, and Lima knows that.
I leave for the south of Peru tomorrow. If Lima is a harbinger for what's to come, I'm going to have a great trip.
Fingers crossed.
