Journaling Helps With Rash First Impressions
I sent the email to the wrong person.
Their email to me was demanding and accusatory. I wasn’t sure why. I intended to forward it to a peer to ask what they thought. I hit reply instead of forward.
Lucky for me, my email was short and simple. “I’m not sure what to think of this.”
After that, I started sleeping on my correspondence. Write today and read it tomorrow before taking action.
Now I've added a strategy to sleeping on it. I write about it in my journal.
My journal knows everything.
It sees all sides and gives great advice. Writing in my journal has a calming effect. When I’m calm, I think better. I come up with reasonable and logical solutions.
Journaling allows you to think through that rash first impression.
It’s not just correspondence that may need time before responding. Consider your thoughts, words, and actions in responding to all situations and people.
Journaling helps those first impressions get a second chance.
Don’t let the force of the impression carry you away. Say to it, ‘hold up a bit and let me see who you are and where you are and where you are from - let me put you to the test”... -Epictetus
