IHA - Information hoarders anonymous
Hi. My name is Artamon and I’m a hoarder.
Hi Artamon.
I thought I knew what I was doing. I thought I had a plan and a process. I was wrong. I need help.
We got you.
Overly dramatic? Perhaps. Accurate? 100% so.
Every time I come across an article, a twitter post or a YouTube video that I think I want to read later, I save it to my read-it-later app or leave it as a tab in my browser…on my desktop, my phone, my iPad. For easy reference.
My intentions are pure. I intend to come back to it and read it…later. And if it’s something I believe I can refer back to, I will make highlights and save it away. Second brain, archive, whatever. It needs saving and I save it. Sound like a good process to you? I think so.
For a process to be of any value, it must be followed. Do you know what the biggest flaw in my process is? Sure you do. It’s me. I’m the flaw. A process or system is nothing but a list of bullet points on a page if you NEVER FOLLOW THEM!
I have talked often about declaring information bankruptcy and starting again. It’s a great idea and should be a part of any good process. You need to recognise when DELETE is better than SAVE. However, as it currently stands, I’m confident I will be back here in 3 months, so there’s no point starting from scratch until I change a habit. The saving habit. The get-back-to-it-later habit. Something. Anything. Otherwise, if we do not learn from our mistakes then we are doomed to repeat them. Someone clever said that once. I’m sure I saved that quote somewhere.
