How to handle under-performers
3 ways to handle an under-performer
- Educate!
Ensure the employee:
- Understands what success looks like
- Is capable of succeeding
- Wants to succeed
Why? One of the biggest faults of first time people leaders(common in start ups) Is not being clear on the expectations of the role and transparent with feedback on performance.
If one of your employees is under-performing, a level should always be step 1.
- Re-deploy:
If the employee lives your values, find a role in the organisation that this person can deliver results in and be an A-Player.
e.g. BDR struggling to sell? Could they be a high performer in customer success or support?
- If these fail, look at exiting this person.
High talent density is one of the strongest network affects your business can have.
A-Players, hire A-Players. B-Players hire Cs & Ds.
