Over the years, my relationship with my parents has been very superficial. They haven't known much about my life beyond the most general aspects because I wasn't really allowed to date, go out with friends, or try sports like surfing or snowboarding. So, I had to keep things low-key. Now that they’ve realized I can choose what I enjoy and do things regardless of their opinions, they’ve become more relaxed about it.

Today, I decided to let my mom into my personal social media life by adding her on Instagram and teaching her how to use it. Now that they see me more as an equal (not fully, but a bit more), I want to open my life to them.

This is not only a learning for this situation, in general, when you treat others as equals, they are more likely to treat you the same. What you give is what you receive (in some kind of way).
