Diversity in work
A friend once told me that her husband hates the phrase ‘diversity in a work place’. I was hooked. No one in today’s woke culture says this openly. Especially a man. This sounds wrong.
She told me how hard working he is and feels let down when less deserving women get priority in promotion.
This made me think. How do women feel about this? Is this a chance for them to make up for generations of being left behind? How would I feel about this if I was made to sit at table only because of my gender? Is this really breaking the glass ceiling? These questions made me feel uncomfortable. I know many women who would not want to be in this position where their capability is questioned.
But, one thought keeps nagging me. Are all men sitting at the table deserving?
My friend’s husband has a genuine reason to be upset. This, however, happens very commonly for women. Discrimination seeps in subtle ways. And then biology takes it to another level. Biological clock clashes with her work ladder. The time gets reset. Most women feel lucky just to be working. Some professions have no room for such women. No one tells us all this while we are up all night working hard to make it to our dream job. One fine day we are left with broken dreams trying to make sense of the world.
So if the law resets time again for some of us, so be it!
My 6 years old girl once asked me why only men invented or discovered something historically. My reply was because women were busy taking care of these men. I hope she can now look up to women sitting at the table and dare to break the glass ceiling.
