Corporate Giants - need to revisit the risk appetite.
The festival economy of India is very vibrant. As we are celebrating Diwali, it brings hope to a lot of local vendors. There is a whole economy around festivals and the local vendors stand to benefit the most from it.
With Reliance venturing into biscuits and ice creams - I am uncertain as to what they are trying to achieve. Not just Reliance, all the established Indian companies have always ventured into consumption based sectors and left little to no space for innovation.
With so much in the bank, these established business houses are taking on small businesses and perhaps disrupting the local economies as well. I think the local economy and small businesses can survive without their fat investments however that same capital if judiciously deployed can leave an indelible global footprint.
India is currently lagging in the global AI race and we are merely following the trend. I believe that these big business houses have a moral responsibility to take on a risky bet either by innovating or promoting native businesses that can be global powerhouses.
India has a great imbalance when it comes to wealth distribution.
The top 1% of the Indian population holds around 40-45% of the country's wealth and the top 10 business houses hold around 20% of the entire wealth. With such a huge financial concentration, it should be upon the top few to stop being sticky with their wealth and display some risk appetite in the best interest of the country and the society. It is the resources of this country and society that have catapulted them to such great heights. It is high time they align their vision which can benefit the country and simultaneously serve their interest as well.
