Bangalore weather
''We come for the jobs and stay for the weather.'' Famous words by a friend when I could not stop raving about the cool Bangalore evenings in May. Unlike coastal Mumbai, Bangalore which is set in a valley is a basin with pockets of land that collect water, eventually giving rise to lakes. I have almost no working or even rudimentary knowledge about the lake landscape of Bangalore except that the urbanization of many years with complete disregard to the civic infrastructure has resulted in apartment and commercial complexes with the prefix ''Lake'' in its name, but the entire ecosystem around what the lake has to offer is in fact missing.
Regardless, linkedin recently reminded me that I have been working in Bangalore for eight years and honestly the weather is one of those reminders of why I have grown to love Bangalore.
The late Sumantra Ghoshal, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sumantra_Ghoshal was someone who I had the good fortune of meeting over several occasions in the early 2000s. He shared something which stayed with me. The weather in New England, during Spring and Autumn, played a key role in that area becoming magnets for educational institutions to set up their campuses. Much before it became fashionable, Prof Ghoshal was writing about the correlation of weather and elite academic performance.
I remember feeling that in Smithfield, Rhode Island during my first week on campus at Bryant in September. I could walk to class and not break into a sweat. Fast forward to Bangalore evenings so many years later and in spite of the traffic and civic infrastructure mayhem, I am so grateful for the wonderful weather that this city has to offer. It remains to be seen whether it will continue in the years to come, but for now it is here to stay.
