Adding images to Nicheless
After mulling it over for a couple of weeks, I made the change.
I gave writers the option of adding a single image at the start of every Nicheless post. I'm not confident that it's the right move, but I'm eager to find out.
If you're a writer here, I owe you an explanation. That's what this post is for.
Firstly, let me get the glaring downside of the change out of the way: Adding an optional image gives writers extra decisions to make. Should you add an image to your post? If yes, which one? Should you use a stock image, one from your camera roll, or should you create a graphic?
I get it. It can be annoying.
But I think the benefits outweigh the costs.
I hope you'll hear me out.
(1) An image adds a useful extra dimension to most pieces. Imagine a piece about a life experience or old memory. Or a book review. Or a piece about a complex concept. All much better with an image or a diagram for context.
(2) I hope the added complexity nudges writers away from using Nicheless as a tool for 'stream of consciousness' writing, and instead as a tool for thoughtful, moderately difficult-to-write, concise pieces that help them clarify their thinking.
(3) Images make pieces more appealing for readers. And getting people to read and reply to your pieces will motivate you to keep writing. Otherwise, as the enthusiasm of using a new platform wanes, so will your motivation.
With that said, it's still day 1 for Nicheless, and I'm keeping an open mind. For now, the next question I'm considering is this – should I reduce optionality by making one image per post compulsory?
If you're a writer here, I'd love to know what you think.
