A Mindset Of "It's Worth A Try" Can Bring Success By Fighting Your Negativity Bias
As a positive person, I still have a strong Eeyore characteristic.
I have doubts.
You seldom hear me express this side of my personality. Acting positive and confident follows the belief that you should act like you want to be. So I appear to have a positive outlook. Which, of course, I do have, except for when I don't.
I shouldn’t be surprised to have doubts. This is how our brains work.
Research shows people naturally have a negativity bias. We remember negative events and feelings more intensely than positive ones. The result is pessimism about ourselves and our world.
I see my negativity bias when new ideas and strategies are proposed.
There’s a solution to this.
Change your mindset to ‘It’s worth a try’ to get an answer instead of persisting in doubt. It will either work or not.
My writing journey has taught me this lesson.
Do I need to write my headline before I write the essay? I doubted this one for months. Then I tried it to learn it makes a big difference.
Do I need a writing niche? Three tries taught me that a niche kills my interest and does not serve my writing purpose.
Over and over, I have to remind myself to be open to the possibilities.
There is a spectrum of outcomes for any possibility.
Sometimes the answer surprises you with YES!
Other times you discover NO WAY.
You won’t know the outcome until you try.
