A cocktail for every decade
Now in the early years of my fourth decade as an adult, am trying to determine what will end up being my go to cocktail in this decade. Wine has and will always remain my trusted and loyal companion at home. Beer will be that calm, peaceful and silent friend walking by my side.
But a cocktail will take on a personality of it's own. There is a promise of a beautiful tomorrow that extends to eternity or an evening that ends all of a sudden with no drama. Or perhaps something in between the two extremes.
Since my early 20's, a cocktail has played multiple roles in my life. It's put me to sleep, made me want to throw up or dance the night away. It's made me laugh (strangely I've never cried or got angry after a cocktail) but mostly I've always been happy that I experimented with trying out a cocktail.
Whether I am travelling or out on a Friday night, my curiosity always get the better of me and I continue to scour local bars. I remain fairly restricted and stick to my tried and tested world of cosmopolitans, mojitos, aperol spritzers, pina coladas even (heaven forbid!). Sometimes a screwdriver may beckon along with mimosas, blood marys or frankly anything with a bubbly. My latest experiments are with palomas.
A cocktail has a way of speaking to three of my five senses. Seated at the bar, I see and hear the bartender create a gentle rhythm with his cocktail shaker which has all the ingredients and ice. My eyes are then treated to a beautiful visual of a pretty glass, dainty garnish and the final pour. Then the first magical sip as it finds its way past my lips along with a world of endless possibilities!
