The "making the world better" fallacy
It's used to justify atrocities, it's used to discriminate, it's used to oppress and most importantly it is used to squash debate on critical topics. The very opportunity to improve a good endeavour can be shut down by using the "making the world better" card. They key is not whether it is making the world better or not, the critical question we should ask is " better for whom?" and at the expense of whom? Every action should be evaluated from a total impact perspective not just shiny objects of immediate benefits. This is also a problem of first order thinking. We label things as beneficial because they will make the world a better place for us and overlook people whom it might impact negatively. We also want to comfortably ignore the second and third order consequences of the action in the long term. The civilization has made progress in it's societal rules, governance, technology and all of that progress came at the cost of some people's lives and the ecosystem of this planet. We have made the world so better for us that now we are threatening our own existence here. How about we stop making the world a better place for us, for a community, for a nation, for a race and for a species and start making ourselves better for the planet earth and the world. We have made progress at the expense of this world now if we want a sustainable future we have to ask, what are we ready to give up to make ourselves better for the world? When we optimize for ourselves we make gains and profits but real progress comes when we optimize for the whole.
