There were few mass shootings in the US over last couple of days and this got me thinking what could be the root causes of such a hideous act of crime. The incidents were given different names such as - gun violence, hate crime, domestic terrorism, white supremist attack etc. based on which media outlet you consume information from. Nonetheless, innocent people lost lives and communities shattered with trauma and anger. Some say it's due to ease of gun access, others blamed certain messages of incitements, while others pointed to the systemic discriminations in the society. I don't want to discard any of these views however, I believe we are heading towards if not already there, the peak of hatred in our society and we are at all time lowest on compassion. There is wholesale hatred towards the slightest of differences between people. Hence, the access to guns makes it dangerous but that is not a root cause. I have seen hundreds killed in communal riots using shovels, bamboo sticks, machetes, butcher knives just out of raw hatred. As mass hatred is growing day by day mass violence is only a result of that. Also the rest of world should not call it an isolated US thing as the growth in hatred among people is everywhere. It is not against a specific ethnic group anymore, it is against everyone and anyone who we see different. The world is moving higher on the hatred scale and only love and compassion can stop us from destroying ourselves. You can ban weapons and violence but you cannot make laws to ban hatred. Similarly you cannot enact love though legal codes. We just have to look at our inner being and unleash what we already possess - compassion to face this mass violence head-on.
