The Efficiency Trap
We're always optimising that we lose the ability to really enjoy any moment. We are always trying to see, "How can I get the most of this moment".
If you look at Efficiency as a formula = Value out of this moment / Time spent on this moment.
Then we have begun to optimise for both = Getting most value, whilst spending the least time.
Unfortunately, sometimes, this blurs the boundaries and enters your personal life as well. How can I speak to a friend 'intimately' for 30 minutes only instead of 1 hour - saving myself 30 minutes in the process.
Why I say, "Unfortunately", is because this really kills the possibility of building anything meaningful - in the longer term.
We are always looking at the next 1 hour or the next x days.
Productivity is good to aspire towards, but by itself, it can be a killer.
As a psychologist once commented, "If you like productivity, psychologists will really like you".
