The Archmage on macOS: Gatekeeper, Quarantine Flags, and a Silent Crash
Field Report: The Archmage (game) — macOS Launch Failure
Machine: MacBook Pro M2 Pro, macOS Sonoma 14.4.
Goal: launch The Archmage by OrchardKit and test performance.
Instead, I got:
“The Archmage is damaged and can’t be opened.”
Classic Gatekeeper behavior (Apple explains it here: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202491). Usually quarantine or signature trouble.
First move: checked attributes.
xattr -l /Applications/The\ Archmage.app
Found com.apple.quarantine. Removed it:
xattr -d com.apple.quarantine /Applications/The\ Archmage.app
Launch #2: icon bounced, then silent crash.
Console logs showed a code-signing validation issue inside a bundled framework. Apple’s documentation on this is here:
https://developer.apple.com/documentation/security/code_signing
Binary was universal (arm64 + x86_64). I forced Rosetta. It launched to menu, then froze while loading assets.
At that point I suspected the install path. The first run had been directly from the DMG. Sonoma sometimes isolates apps via translocation (see: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201940), which can break internal resource paths.
I re-downloaded from the official source, moved the app to Applications before first launch, ejected the DMG, cleared quarantine once, rebooted.
I had bookmarked this macOS-related reference while checking similar behavior:

Launch #4: clean start. No freeze. Native arm64, Rosetta off.
Performance after fix:
- 60 FPS stable at 1440p
- No shader stutter after initial load
- Controller recognized instantly
No Mac App Store build available (search: https://apps.apple.com/us/search?term=The%20Archmage).
Root cause wasn’t corruption. It was macOS security + running from DMG + quarantine flags.
If I’d installed directly into Applications and cleared quarantine once from the start, I’d have saved 40 minutes.
Not broken. Just Sonoma being Sonoma.
