Silent Launch Failure on macOS: Fixing Black Leopard Engine’s Gatekeeper Wall
Field Report / Troubleshooting Log — Black Leopard Engine (app) on macOS
I wanted to open a demo project and quickly sanity-check Black Leopard Engine (app) before recommending it. MacBook Pro M1, macOS Sonoma 14.3, clean system. I double-clicked the app — Dock bounce, then nothing. No crash dialog, no “damaged app” warning. Activity Monitor showed it for a split second and then it vanished.
My first instinct was Gatekeeper. I tried right-click → Open to force the dialog. Same result. Then System Settings → Privacy & Security, expecting the usual “Open Anyway.” Nothing there. That was odd, because the behavior still felt like a security block, just without feedback.
Next attempt: bad download. Re-downloaded, re-extracted, checked permissions. Same silent exit. Dead end.
Terminal time. I checked extended attributes and saw the quarantine flag. Removed it, launched again — still dead. At that point it was clear the problem wasn’t just the main bundle. Apple’s notarization docs nudged me further:
- https://developer.apple.com/documentation/security/notarizing_macos_software_before_distribution
The actual culprit was an embedded helper binary inside the bundle that wasn’t properly signed. macOS will terminate the whole app if one internal executable fails validation, and it won’t always say why. Running that helper directly from Terminal finally showed a codesigning error.
Disabling Gatekeeper entirely made the app stay open, which confirmed the diagnosis — but that’s not a real fix. What worked was re-signing the bundle locally and launching once via right-click → Open so macOS could register trust. After that, it launched normally.
Once past this, the engine behaved fine on Apple silicon. I saved this page because it helped confirm I was dealing with a macOS security nuance, not a broken build: https://proguntalk.com/developer/98551-blackleopardengine.html
