rome
I'm sitting here in Rome, within spitting distance from the Arch of Titus, which commemorates the sacking of Jerusalem two thousand years ago. I'm sitting here, as a Jew, thinking to myself, well, they must've really thought something of the Jews then, to have built themselves an arch commemorating the destruction of our holiest of holies. Like a kind of imperial "haha, fuck you and your stupid temple." We must've really made an impression on them. Not every podunk province that was subsumed into the empire was honored with an arch in the capitol.
And then Christianity happened, and the empire was forced to adopt an offshoot of Judaism as the state religion to keep a lid on slave rebellions and such, because of all the social justice talk.
Two thousand years later, I ate carciofi alla giudia for lunch.
Who gets the last laugh?
