Put your money where your mouth is
Governments the world over, want to be able to exert better control over Twitter. So far their only options have been to enact laws that compel the company to shape its behavior in particular ways.
But Twitter is a global company that has to abide by the laws and regulations of all the countries in which it operates. More often than not this means that it’s decisions are not in line with what any government wants.
What options does the governments have? Up until recently not much.
But Twitter is currently for sale. And even at Musk’s original offer of $44 billion that may not be too much to pay for control of the worlds communication infrastructure.
So my radical suggestion is this. Let the government put in a bid to buy Twitter. That way the pipes through which the world communicates can be in public hands where it ought to be.
The question now will be which government will get its bid in first.
