Protect all grandmothers
When we spotted her garden from far away we were theorising on what could be growing. One of her family members spotted us leaf and drain inspectors. They rolled their eyes and made way for Ajita kakima to take charge. The matriarch introduced all the trees like her old friends. There was jamun, mango, banana, jackfruit, ice apple, moringa, coconut, gooseberries to name a few.
A pond is dug, there is fish in it that’s waiting to greet the kitchen. Azolla shimmers on the surface of the waters, some of it could be dinner for her 7 goats. We soak in the sunset while marvelling at this 400 sqm land that she sculpted that supports 7 people. She beams at us with her widest toothless best and hobbles into the house to bring us dried mango candy from the last season. The warmth is infectious. One dreams of being an efficient ajji. Much to learn.
