Just start
Easier said than done, right?
I know this firsthand because this has been my problem for years—decades, even. You see, I've always loved writing. I started crafting stories and essays at eleven years old. The writing wasn't great, but I loved the process: formulating thoughts and ideas, turning them into stories that people might actually read.
Fast forward to now, and I am a writer by trade. Though not quite what I imagined back then - I don't write stories about fairies anymore, mostly technical papers that can be pretty dry. But I genuinely enjoy the process, so I don't mind.
Here's the thing though - I still want to write for myself. Writing for work lets me exercise my creative muscles, but I find myself completely lacking motivation when it comes to personal projects. I can't seem to start. I can't seem to go anywhere. All I have are ideas that never come to life.
But for some reason, today I started.
I don't know how committed I'll be to this, but I figured it's better to begin now than wait for all the stars to align - if you know what I mean.
Maybe that's exactly what you need to do too. Whatever creative project has been sitting in your mind, waiting for the perfect moment, the perfect plan, the perfect inspiration—maybe it's time to just start. Messy, imperfect, uncertain.
Because here's what I'm learning: starting badly is infinitely better than not starting at all.
